Buying a Used Dump Truck: 12 Things to Check Before You Pay
A field checklist for used dump trucks — hydraulics, bed, frame, and the red flags that should make you walk away.
Sell My Rig Team·June 7, 2026·7 min read
Before buying a used dump truck, check the hydraulic hoist operation, bed condition, frame for cracks, ECM fault codes, brakes, tires, and title history. Sell My Rig Inspections covers all twelve of these checkpoints in a same-day dump truck inspection for $350 flat, including a full ECM scan and 200+ photos.
The 12-point checklist
- Hydraulic hoist — cycle the bed fully up and down; watch for drift, leaks, and slow lift.
- Bed condition — check for cracks, heavy rust, and patch welds in the floor.
- Tailgate — verify latch operation and seal.
- Frame rails — look for cracks, especially behind the cab and at the hoist mount.
- ECM fault codes — pull the J1939 scan for engine and aftertreatment issues.
- Brakes — measure lining depth and check for air leaks.
- Tires — tread depth in 32nds at every position.
- Suspension — inspect springs, shocks, and bushings under load.
- PTO — confirm the power take-off engages smoothly.
- Hydraulic fluid — check level, color, and for contamination.
- Cab and controls — test all hoist and gate controls.
- Title and VIN — verify the VIN and run NMVTIS history.
Red flags
Frame cracks at the hoist mount, a bed that drifts down under load, or a recently repainted bed hiding rust are reasons to walk away or budget a major repair.
